Post-Season

The 2006 season saw the Exiles playing at above the lowest league for the first time, and in a new concept 'Division 1a'. The structure of the divisions was such that the teams in Division 1a played each of their rivals twice, and then each of the four teams in division 1 once each. The design was to allow the teams in 1a exposure to the level they should aspire to be at.

The year once again saw coaching changes at the club, Phil Wood retiring after his excellent campaign in 2005, and experienced American James Mitchell took the reins. Mitchell had a good pedigree having coached in the USA, before also taking roles at Ipswich Cardinals and Farnham Knights in previous seasons.

On the playing front the vast majority of the 2005 squad returned, and additions included standout American receiver Eddie Gray, former Essex Spartan Lloyd Giscombe, former Ipswich Cardinal Paul Barclay and Canadian Jordan Cropper. The squad also benefitted from youth graduates again, with Dan Young, Ian Hills, Pat Turner, Sam Evans and Jerry Hughes all joining the squad and contributing greatly.

The year also caused a stir with Hana Rabuzin joining the squad, to date the senior teams first and only female player. Hana proved herself the equal of her male team mates, and earned her playing time during the season, her first reception caused quite a stir in the Britball community and made it onto several news websites!

In a strange season the Exiles lost each of their games to their strong division 1 opponents, and then (with the exception of the Cheetahs) each of the other teams slugged it out for the Division 1a title. In a competitive division, each of the teams took games from each other and ended up on the same record. Tie break rules saw Bristol pip us to the title as they had a better points differential than us in our head to head games.

Having played well, and qualified for the post season in their first season outside Division 2 the Exiles had already exceeded expectations, but a home tie against the Staffordshire Surge saw another huge win for the club, and progression to the semi finals.

The semi final was to be an away tie with last seasons nemisis the Coventry Jets. The Jets were huge favorites having enticed more big players to the club since 2005, and had cruised to another undefeated season, including winning against all teams in the division 1 games they played (again in the weaker Northern division). In front of a partisan crowd of 1500 the Exiles performed admirably, but ultimately lost to a stronger side. They did however score 18 points, and considering the Jets had only conceded 21 points all season, the Exiles had proved themselves to be a serious contender and one of the countries top 10 teams.
