The 2008 season saw Norman Navarro take the Head Coaching role, the clubs fourth head coach in as many years. He was joined by Scott Rowe, the ex-Olympian and London Monarch joining as Defensive co-ordinator. The coaching staff also benefited from Malcolm Phillips and Sacha Conte also joining from the Olympians.
The year also saw Alan Hands, Dave Pester, Lee Nash and Martin Jefkins finally hang up their boots, and join the coaching staff on a full time basis. This gave the Exiles one of the biggest, and best, full time coaching staffs in the country.
The club also lost three other long serving players to retirement, Graham Deacon, Stuart Collings and Gary Ead. But a host of new faces joined the team including Kirk 'The Widget' Beacham and Rob Welling from Essex Spartans, Aaron Griffiths, Carl Cahoon, Marlon Smith, Rich McHugh and Ade Balogun from the London Olympians and a diminuitive Aussie called Ryan Kelly who arguably was the clubs most effective weopen during the season.
The youth team also sent a bumper number of graduates up to the squad as Marc Mulgrave, Reiss Bowen, Luke Spencer, Theo Coleman-Brown and Joe Alexis stepped up. Alexis became the second of the original 2002 flag squad to progress to the senior team, and went on to become the first rookie to lead the team in tackles and be named Players Player of the Year.
The year was again frustrating on the pitch, our 6-4 record meant we just missed out on play-off football, as the Sundevils held a better points margin than we did, and we again felt we should have done better. All the games were hard faught as the division turned into one of the most competitive for years, and every team turned out an upset win at some point of the season.
The Sussex Thunder went on to defeat the Redditch Arrows in the final, and amazingly the Southern Sundevils folded following the season!
