Exiles secure play-off place

Kent Exiles 24-16 Milton Keynes Pathfinders

The Kent Exiles booked their place in the play-offs with a second victory over the Pathfinders on Sunday. The Kent side started fast, a long kick-off return from Anthony Clarke set up Michael Wekpe with an 8 yard run for the touchdown. And soon after Derrick Bennett grabbed a pass from Zac Ritchie for the second score and a 12-0 lead. The half ended with Wekpe scoring his second of the day in unusual circumstances, the Pathfinders defence got pressure on Quarterback Ritchie who fumbled as he was tackled, only for Wekpe to pick up the loose ball and sprint 24 yards for the touchdown and an 18-0 lead. The half ended on Travis Bilhams interception, and the Exiles looked good for their lead. The second half saw the Exiles struggle, the Pathfinders got on the board early with an 11 yard return of a Ritchie interception, and then tacked on the 2 point conversion run as well, bringing the score to 18-8. Ritchie threw his second interception on the Exiles next drive, and it looked like the Pathfinders were going to get right back into the game, but some great tackling from Bilham, Aaron Alexis and Martin Harrison soon stopped the threat. The Exiles then drove downfield and put the game away as Nick Thompson barrelled in from 3 yards out, and a 24-8 lead with only a few minutes remaining. There was still time for the Pathfinders to score once more as they went to the air and found the endzone on a 32 yard pass, and then added another 2 point conversion to bring the score within 8 points, however the attempted onside kick was easily recovered by Nick Clifford to make the game safe. After tha game Head Coach Tony Bainbridge commented "It's great to win the game and cement that place in the post season, that's what the season is all about, giving yourself a chance at winning the bowl game. Having said that we mae hard work of it today, we made mistakes and mentally werent where we needed to be. Now we've got a couple of weeks to get back to top form beofre taking on the Blue Raiders here at the Beaverwood in our final home game of the season".
