Bowl Game Appearance for Exiles Matt Murphy

If you tune in to ESPN2 tonight at 5pm you can see a fantastic game as the Lane Kiffin led Florida Atlantic Owls Take on North Texas in the Conference USA Bowl Game.

Earlier in the season the two teams met in a high scoring affair, with the Owls winning 69-31, but it’s not just because of the high scoring potential you should watch, because you’ll also get a chance to see Kent Exiles Alumni Matt Murphy in action for the Owls…

Matt will be wearing #55, and at 6’7”, 310 lbs will be a presence on the offensive line.

Matt first started in the sport in 2010 aged just 15, when he joined the Kent Exiles Youth program. Matt came from a rugby background, but after spending the season with the Exiles American Football became a passion.

Matt played again for the Youth team in 2011, before moving up to the Exiles Junior program in 2012 as a lineman. He clearly had a talent for the sport and, with encouragement from his coaches, a year later moved across the Atlantic and joined the Out of Door Academy as a high school junior. He then moved to top sports educational institution IMG Academy in central Florida where he played his senior year.

Matts senior year was very successful, and he had offers from several colleges to continue both his academic and athletic careers with them, but he chose a four-year athletic scholarship with the University of Buffalo, an NCAA Division 1 (FBS) team, the highest level of college football in America.

After 3 years with the Bulls Matt transferred to Florida Atlantic to complete his studies, and this year has helped them to a surprise 9-3 record and a bowl game appearance, playing teams like Wisconsin, Navy and Marshall along the way.

Matt has kept in touch with the Exiles during his time in America, and visits when back in the UK. He credits the team with giving him his love for the sport, and the basic building blocks with which Matt has turned himself into a top athlete.

So tonight, everyone at the Exiles will be an Owls fan, and we wish Matt the best of luck in the game. We’re all hoping to see a photo of him holding the trophy soon!
